First Doctor Visit
Nick had his first visit to the pediatrician's office today and, surprise, surprise, we got Dr. Bizarro again. We're going to be very sure to request that we don't get him for future appointments. Nick's vital stats are currently 22 inches long (97th percentile), 9 lbs 2 oz (90th percentile), and head circumference 14.25 inches (50th percentile). His weight loss is excellent, only 4 oz below his birth weight which means he is eating very well and thriving. He does have three very minor issues that will all certainly resolve themselves with no treatment. The first is a small heart murmur that wan't apparent in his in-hospital checkups. These are usually of no consequence in newborns and a quite common. An informative article is
here. The second is that he apparently has a blocked tear duct, or in pompous doctor speak a "nasolacrimal duct obstruction". This is another common condition that will almost certainly resolve without treatment. Read more
here. Finally, he seems to have a "soft airway" which makes a little crowing sound on the in breath when he cries. The cartilage will firm up as he grows. We think this is much the same condition his cousin Hera had, but less severe since it isn't causing any problems when he eats. We'll have to talk to Uncle Mike and Aunt Devi and have them remind us how it all went for Hera. Anyway, he has his next appointment on March 11th, where we'll get to see a different person who will be able to talk to us without us wanting to punch them. Thankfully we have the internet to get useful information!
