Spring Training
Spring has arrived, and the cherry blossoms are starting to come out. March Madness is in full swing but our minds are on baseball. We're really looking forward to the upcoming Bowie Baysox season, now that Nick is big enough to start to enjoy it and Lux is a dedicated fan. Today was Baysox Family Fun Day, the unofficial kickoff of the minor league season. They had free food, live music, and tons of games for the kids. Most of the games were more appropriate for older kids, but Lux gave pretty much all of them a try. She couldn't throw the ball hard enough for it to register on the radar gun (the kid before her got 14 mph), but she didn't seem to care. She ran around the bases with Susan 4 times in a row, and hit the wiffle ball off the tee a few times. Everyone had fun, and it looks like we're in for a good summer of baseball.Lux also got to hug a Zebra (apparently from some movie) and high five Nemo. It was a good day. Nick was definitely impressed by Louie, the Baysox mascot, and the ball park french fries, so we are hoping he will enjoy the upcoming baseball season.
We finished our preschool visits, and liked both of the two cooperative preschools Lux got in to, but ended up selecting Fort Hunt Cooperative. The main reason was the schedule for next year where both kids would be going in the morning, rather than Lux in the afternoon and Nick in the morning. Susan seems to be looking forward to having a few hours to herself a few days a week. Also, the parents and teachers we met at Ft. Hunt all seemed really cool and somewhat less likely to be wearing "Mom Jeans" (if you don't know what they are watch this movie).
Another thing we are looking forward to is sleeping. There hasn't been much of that going on in our house for the last month or so. Ever since the first bout of stomach flu, we've gone through a series of illnesses getting passed around the family. This has led to LOTS of waking up at night to change diapers, sheets, and more, or just calm fussy babies. We were getting pretty close to total exhaustion since neither of us has slept more than 3 hours in a row in over a month. Thankfully for me, I got to spend two nights on a business trip in Blacksburg, VA where I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn, though I felt bad for Susan stranded back with the kids. It does seem that things are improving, however, as Nick seems to be feeling a lot better and last night he only had one period when he needed some late night attention. Hopefully tonight will be improved as well. If not, I think I'll let Susan go stay at a hotel on Route 1 so she can get at least one full night's sleep. :-)
We did get some good news yesterday as well. We found out that we got into the pool club we were on the waiting list for. This will be great over the summer, since they have a super baby pool and very nice grounds, a picnic area, a big playground and a stocked fishing pond.
Big Nick will be 13 months old tomorrow, and he still isn't seeming like he's on the verge of walking, though he keeps getting more adept at cruising and getting around quickly by crawling. He is also learning to be tough by learning to deal with his sister's attacks on him.
Nick is also very, very vocal. He jibber jabbers all day long and often keys into real words. He says lots of things, mostly what Lux has said, since he adores her. Sadly, he has not yet sad Cinderella, which she really wanted as his first word.
Nick has also learned to kiss, to our peril. His kisses are long, wet and often unwarranted. If you try to turn your cheek Nick often forcefully will turn your face for a full mouth to mouth kiss.
