Natural Inductions
Some people may be wondering why we are so intent on getting labor to start soon and avoid a hospital induction (which uses Pitocin to induce contractions medically):* Susan is big and pretty uncomfortable at this point and the weather is supposed to be in the 90s starting next week
* The baby is already big and will gain about 0.5 pounds per week. In fact, her doctors have advised against her eating sugar and fruit juice since those will only make the baby grow bigger faster.
* The in-laws are starting to arrive on July 15th, and we'd really like to have a couple of weeks to recover and get to know the baby before all the distractions begin.
* And, most importantly, we REALLY want to avoid Pitocin. The contractions brought on by Pitocin are VERY painful for the mother and can even cause distress for the baby. Pitocin almost inevitably leads to the need for pain medications and a host of other medical interventions that we hope to avoid.
So, we are going to keep trying to get labor started with non-medial techniques if we can. These include: evening primrose oil, raspberry leaf tea, lots of sex, spicy foods, as much walking as possible, fresh pinapple, nipple stimulation, and ankle pressure points. If all those don't work by something like next weekend, we'll take it to another level: the dreaded Castor Oil. Yuk!
