Midway Through May

Wow, with the stream of illnesses, intermixed with visitors, we've been completely delinquent about blogging! We'll try to get better.

Grandma Paula and Grandpa John came out for Spring Break, and we all had a fun time. We got to take advantage of grandparents-as-babysitters and went out to a real adult party for the first time in a LONG time. It was very pleasant, despite the fact that I spent much of the time talking to a hyperactive 10-year-old who reminded me what I'm in for with Lux in about 8 years. She simply wouldn't shut up. The next day, we all went to the Baysox game where the weather was perfect and Lux got to run the bases with Grandma Paula after the game.

Easter was lots of fun. We had a brunch with Aunt Karen and watched as a real live bunny hopped across the yard. Then later we discovered that he had hidden plastic eggs in the yard! Lux and Nick both loved collecting them and both really enjoyed all of the chocolate they got to eat.

We then got to welcome Jacob Aron Kaplan, the new son of our friends Barbara and Seth. He is a little guy, but great looking. We tried to keep the moyl away from Nick at the bris where Lux said of little Jack "He's so cute!"

A few weeks later, Granddad Dan and Grandma Janie came out for a long weekend. We really packed in all sorts of activities during their trip. We went to the Virginia Gold Cup horse races for a great day out in the sun with a nice picnic and lots of running around looking at horses and other people's parties. The next day, we repeated the Sunday afternoon Baysox game with a different set of grandparents. Again, everyone had a good time and the weather was lovely. On Monday we did something really unusual, we got a babysitter! This allowed all of the adults to go out to a FANTASTIC restaurant (Restaurant Eve in Old Town Alexandria) and celebrate my 39th birthday. The experience in the tasting room was pretty much perfect, just as we had remembered from the one previous time we ate there.

Everyone is pretty much healthy at the moment (except for Susan's chronic pain and night sweats) but that hasn't been the case for much of the Spring. We've passed around a series of head colds and stomach bugs. Nick has had a long-lasting bout of constipation ever since he recovered from his last diarrhea episode. We thought it might clear itself up with enough fruit and fiber in his diet, but it has continued to be an issue. The poor guy really gets uncomfortable and strains a lot. We've come to think that he is actually trying to hold it in, which we've heard can be a problem for little kids sometimes. There have been some signs in the last few days that it is getting better, so we'll hope so.

We are now one week from Nick's 15 month birthday and, not only is he not walking, he still hasn't even stood unsupported for more than 1 or 2 seconds. There doesn't seem to be any physical problem since he is VERY mobile, but he just doesn't seem ready to walk just yet. He does do some things like crab walk on just his hands and feet (no knees), and he cruises all the time. Perhaps it is just that he is colossal. He is probably going to pass Lux in weight pretty soon. She won't have Nick to push around much longer. He's coming up on his 15 month doctor visit, so we'll talk to them about the walking and the pooping issues.

On the other hand, his verbal and musical skills continue to grow rapidly. He says lots of recognizable words these days like bird, car, dog, one, yeah, cracker, mama, and he loves to make animal sounds. At music class, and in front of the TV, he is amazing. He claps along to the music and does the actions better than most all the kids.

Now we are really looking forward to next weekend when our friends Scott and Felicia and their kids come down for Memorial Day Weekend. The pool opens on Saturday, so we'll probably be spending a lot of time in the water. We can't wait. We've even started another short session of swim lessons in preparation. This time, I lied about Nick's age so we could all be in the same class and it is a lot of fun. Nick is still great in the water and Lux has made great strides in being comfortable in the pool.

She hasn't made strides in potty training, however, or at least not big ones. Lux has finally sat on the potty, but isn't really interested and we don't want to push it too hard. Lately, however, we have been talking about how much fun a potty party would be - the cake, the balloons, the music - if she decided to start using the potty. She seems a bit curious.
