Spring has Sprung

Lots has happened in the past few weeks so I'm doing some catching up. Just before Easter Grandpa John and Grandma Paula came to visit, which was great. Lux was still having some of her sleep issues, which was frustrating as we wanted to show off our perfect daughter who goes to bed without complaint. Their visit coincided with the blooming of the cherry blossoms, but we almost had to miss them this year because of the weather. It had been rainy and cold for a week and just when we thought our chance had gone, the skies cleared. But now it was very windy and cold. Even so the whole group of us valiantly made the trek, John in a rented wheel chair thanks to a back injury, Paula in as many layers of clothes as she could manage and Lux and I clinging to each other for warmth. We got about 200 yards before giving up and returning to the car. Luckily, the windchill had scared off other blossom viewers as well and we were able to drive to the Tidal Basin and park quite close. Lux lost all patience with the wind and cold within minutes, but we got a few good photos, and you would never guess how uncomfortable we were.

For Easter we made Lux a basket with Cheerio-filled eggs, books and toys and hid it from her in her box. She was delighted to find it, though we were feeling a little less than delighted because she had had another sleepless night which had left us under rested. Luckily she didn't fight at nap time so we were able to pull things together in time for our Easter party. Lots of friends came and Lux slept through the first part of the party, but when she woke I put on her party dress and she socialized all day like a champ.

I had my worries about our trip to the Pacific Northwest because it had been so long since Lux had flown and she was having such trouble with sleep, but things simply couldn't have gone better. We flew to Seattle and hooked up with Uncle John, Aunt Vanessa and cousins Liam and Gwen, and then Aunt Danielle flew in. On day two we loaded up the cars and drove to the car ferry which we took to Orcas Island. The house we had rented there was great - lots of windows with beautiful views of the water. Liam, who is nearly two and has been dealing with a new sister, had been feeling a bit territorial at his house, but in the neutral territory of Orcas Island, took Lux's encroachments in stride. Plus, he had the added distraction of boats, sea planes, and especially the skate park that was just down the road. With three kids under the age of two and five adults it wasn't easy getting organized for outings, but we really enjoyed just being together. Next time we'll have to stay longer.

One of the best things about the trip was that it seemed to regulate Lux's sleep. She slept well in her borrowed crib and when we got home it was as if she had never had a problem. As an added bonus, she still is a bit confused from the time change so is waking up later in the mornings!

Finally, today Lux had her (belated) nine month check up. She weighs 19 lbs (40th percentile) and is 29 inches long (which drops her down to 90th percentile so maybe she won't be a basketball center after all). She had her foot pricked for a blood test, which she tolerated, and a hepatitis shot, which made her cry. Her iron is a bit low, the doctor recommended feeding her pate (well, actually she said liverwurst. Paul asked about pate and she agreed that it was fine). It looks as if she will soon have some top teeth, four in fact, which could explain some of the sleep problems.

This weekend - Lux's first march on Washington.
