Rock Me Amadeus or Take Me to the River
So, in hopes of raising a child with more musical ability than the both of us have put together (very, very little) or at the very least one with an appreciation for music, we took the drastic step of enrolling in an infant music class. Of course, Lux has plenty of experience with music at home, but though she attended a number of concerts in utero, her live music experience since birth has been limited to the silly songs we make up about her (Sample lyrics include the acclaimed "Big Head on a Little Neck" and "Grumplestiltskin, Queen of the World").Our class (Mom and Lux) is called Music Together, one developed by the Center for Music and Young Children. Pluses include the fact that it is held mere blocks from home and is attended by Juliana, Lux's friend from two blocks away. It all seemed like a fab idea until we got there and I realized that Lux can't sing (or say anything other than aaahhhh) so that meant I had to do all the singing. Also on the negative side is the fact that Lux, who is most definitely teething, thinks all the instruments are there solely to ease her gum pain, which means we need to deposit them in the "Slobber Bin" after she has chomped them. Lux is the youngest child in the class, which I like, because she seems to get a lot of ideas from watching older children. And I love her enough to keep going to the class, even if it means having to sing and dance and do hand gestures while she chomps away obliviously. Ugh. Parenthood is full of sacrifices.
Lux's other class (we won't over schedule her, I promise) is swimming. Her first swimming class was Saturday, right before Paul left to go to Aspen. I tagged along to watch and it was super cute to see her in her swim diapers in the pool with Dad (pictures soon). There is only one other girl in her class, a one year old, but Lux held her own. As in music class, she was more interested in chomping the pool toys than anything else, but they had the advantage of distracting her enough so that she didn't notice that she was in a body of water many thousands of times larger than she had ever been in before. Also as in music class, Baby and Me Swimming involves a good deal of singing, which serves Paul right. The only drawback is that our tall, slim daughter doesn't have a lot of baby blubber to keep her warm, so she was shivering by the time class was over.
And speaking of baby blubber, Lux had her latest weigh in. Her stats are continuing towards supermodel proportions. She is 28 inches tall (off the charts as always), weighs 15lbs, 10 oz. (45 percentile) and her head now measures 17 inches around (74 percentile). She also had some shots, we she tolerated well, and the presence of an incoming tooth on the lower right front was confirmed, so at least she has an excuse for her continuing general crankiness. She hasn't been great about allowing me to look at her budding new arrival, but from what I can tell it seems to be coming in at a bit of an angle, confirming our fears that she will, like her parents, will need extensive orthodontia. Oh well.
