RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR
It feels a little odd to think that it is no longer the year of Lux's birth, but there's no stopping the march of time, I guess. We welcomed in the new year at Seth and Barbara's house - a great party. Bringing Lux with us meant bringing practically everything she owned - including the portable crib, but Seth and Barbara were very understanding about it all. In spite of having all the comforts of home, Lux decided all she really needed that night was to be carried around, forever. Big suprise there. She napped through the dropping of the ball then spent the rest of the night partying with us. It was nearly dawn when we made our way home and were struck with the realization that having a baby means you can't sleep in on New Year's Day. Hmm.We took the day in shifts, napping, monitoring baby and watching football until the three of us managed to recover. Heaping servings of our traditional Hoppin' John helped, but I don't think Lux tried it. We were back on schedule, more or less, in no time.
The Saturday after New Year's we decided to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and go for a hike on the C & O Canal trail. We figured it would be a great time to try our jog stroller out farther from home. The stroller was easy to break down and stick in the back of the Jeep and off we went. Unfortunately, Lux decided that once we got there that she no longer liked the jog stroller that she had, up to that moment, loved. She was not hungry or uncomfortable. She just wanted to be carried. Forever. We, counting on her previous affection for the stroller, had not brought a baby backpack or baby bjorn. We tried to power through it, treating everyone around us to the shrill shreiks of an angry baby. Just what people like to hear when they are out enjoying the quiet beauty of nature. Finally, Lux fell asleep and we were able to get in a good four miles. And every time I've used the jog stroller since (once even while jogging!) she has liked it just as much as ever. I guess she just threw that fit in to keep us guessing.
At home Lux sits and plays by herself fairly well, sometimes for large blocks of time, especially when Bean, the kitty, comes to join her. Bean has been very tolerant of Lux pulling out great handfuls of fur and trying to eat her head, for which we are grateful. Lux also goes to sleep with hardly a peep, for both naps (two or three a day) and bedtime. She went through what we assume was a growth spurt during which she ate like a piggy and woke at 3 am for a snack, but that seems to have passed. She is still having some trouble with waking briefly at 3 am, but all it takes is a couple of pats and a pacifier to put her back to sleep. She has been trying new foods and has become a real fan of Cheerios, though not all of them actually get eaten. She has been a little on the testy side for the past few days and we suspect (hope) that what everyone has been saying for the past three months is actually coming to fruition - she is cutting some teeth. It is hard to say for sure, because she isn't really great at letting us get a good look at her gums, but it seems probable.
And speaking of ringing in the new year, Lux and Susan began their music class together today. So far most of the music making and singing is being done by Susan, while Lux sent more than her fair share of instruments to the "slobber bin" where they will be disinfected for the next class. Hopefully, Lux is paying more attention to the instructor than she is to her mother's off key warbling. The last thing we need is another tin ear in this house.
Next week - Another visit to the pediatrician.
