Rug Burns
We were pretty certain that nightcrawling was likely to lead to day crawling and for the week before Valentine's Day we watched Lux carefully as she managed to back her way into areas that had been previously undiscovered. Like my office with its oh so tempting phone cords. She also discovered that while she couldn't quite crawl, she could execute a spin move that would get her where she wanted, so long as it wasn't too far away. We were impressed with her ingenuity.Friday the 13 was not so ominous as one would assume, but no forward progress. Lux went to music class with Liam from birthing class, she chewed all the instuments, he sang and played drums. Saturday she went to swim class and swam like a champ. On Sunday, we celebrated Valentine's day with a lunch at the Blue Point Grill. Lux had bread dipped in olive oil, salad, wild mushroom risotto and bourbon bread pudding. I'm not sure we're saving money by not buying baby food in jars, but at least we're raising an epicurean. Later we met up with Aunt Karen, and courtesy of Nana Jane, went out for frozen custard at the Dreamery. It was Lux's first taste of custard (vanilla) and she liked it just fine (little surprise there given how much of it she had in utero).
On Sunday we had a belated Valentine's Day brunch for the people from our birthing class. Lux still wasn't crawling forward, but the party was a success nonetheless. Five babies and ten proud parents. I made gift bags for all the babies and they sat in a circle in the living room and watched as Lux stole all their cups and balls and picture frames and then tried to eat their bags. She waved her stolen treasures about with abandon, hitting other children in the face and making them cry. Of course she didn't mean to make them cry, she's just spirited. Really, really spirited. At least she doesn't bite (yet). We got some great photos of the kids at the party. Make sure to check out the montage on her movie page that Paul put together.
Monday was a holiday. We ran errands and bought a new couch. Lux ate Mexican food (beans, rice, pico de gallo and guacamole). There wasn't much time to practice crawling. Tuesday I was sick and Paul went back to work. I lay around on our old sagging couch feeling miserable and Lux started to crawl. Just a little bit those first few days, but unmistakable forward crawling. Playing on the floor she started to whine a little, hungry for a bottle. Instead of going to her I held my arms out and she came to me. Slowly, with lots of complaining, but she did it. By the end of the week she was a fiend. Once she figured it out, there was no turning back. Now she explores everywhere, fearlessly. One leg straight, the other bent, she speeds across the floor. Having no fear of heights she likes to hurl herself off couches and stairs and the other day she dumped a bucket of rocks on herself and found it wasn't so fun after all. So we have ourselves a crawler. (check out the video) And I doubt it will be long before she can walk. Already she pulls herself up to standing on anything and everything. I said it before and I'll say it again. We're in deep trouble.
