Nightcrawler

Lux is now seven months old and we have hit a glitch. She is trying very hard to learn to crawl, so hard that she has been practicing in her sleep, which has lead to some not so peaceful nights. We often wake to her desperate cries and go in to find her trapped on her hands and knees, unsure of how to proceed. She looks awake (and certainly sounds it - she's got quite a set of lungs) but once you flip her onto her back she immediately rolls to her side, grabs her dolly and falls back asleep. It's a bit like sleepwalking, except louder and she isn't getting anywhere. We've read that this behavior is common right before a big breakthrough in skills, so I expect she'll be crawling like a champ any day now. Already she squirms constantly, desperate to be anywhere but where she is. We're in big trouble.

After five weeks of music class Lux is beginning to participate some (right on schedule). Though most instruments she touches still end up in the slobber bin, she often waves them around or twirls them like a baton (my favorite) in addition to chomping on them. At home she has been learning to clap, though we haven't had the courage to try in class yet. Swim class is going, well, swimmingly. Lux's Sunday morning class, which was wonderful and only had one other student in it, was sadly cancelled because of its small size, but she has been able to continue on Saturdays. This class is large, and though Lux is the youngest student, because of her time in the intimate Sunday class she is one of the most experienced. Yesterday she got to demonstrate to everyone her superb technique for "going under".

Lux continues to drool like a maniac, and her two lower teeth are quite prominent, though not fully up. When she is not trying to destroy everything around her (especially paper) or working on her crawling technique (so as to reach more things to destroy) she likes pulling toys out of a foam box we've made for her and playing with her toy trucks. Another favorite toy is a piece of lace she likes to suck on. She likes peekaboo and standing on the couch and looking out the front window. She also continues to be obsessed with our cat Bean, who has been remarkably patient. There have been a few times when Bean felt the need to bat Lux's hands away, but the cat kept her claws sheathed, bless her heart.

Finally, I learned the power of a silly hairdo. Lux, who was born with a good bit of hair, has a sparse little forelock that has grown rather long. Parting her hair can give her that used car salesman look, but there haven't been a lot of other options, because her hair is so thin. But the other day I tried making a little ponytail with an elastic and it held. Voila - silly fountain of hair sticking straight up. We went to the grocery store with her hair that way and it took twice as long as usual to finish our shopping. Every person (not a writer's embellishment!) we passed had something to say about it and most people wanted to try to coax a smile from Lux or find out about her unusual name. Many said the hairdo reminded them of their own children many years back and never have so many people told me how beautiful my baby was. Honestly, people were literally poking each other and pointing as we passed. Next time I'm in a hurry I think I going to give her the salesman comb over.
