New Measurements

Last week was Lux's four month pediatrician visit. She is perfectly healthy and got four more vaccinations (ouch!). Her measurements were: Weight 13 lbs. 13 oz (50th percentile), Length 26.75 inches (> 95th percentile), Head 16 inches (50th percentile). So, she continues to be very tall and lean. Her height is way off the charts; she'd be very tall even for a 6 month old!

Tuesday was a holiday for me, so we got to have a wonderful family day together. We went to the Matrix: Revolutions in Georgetown at the "Reel Moms" showing where babies are invited. Two of our friends (Maya and Katherine) came too with their babies (Alexandra and Liam) and we all went out for lunch together with another mom and baby we met at the movies. Then we strolled around Georgetown doing some shopping and taking a little tour of the GU campus. Lux got an adorable scarf at Piccolo Piggies.

We're busy now getting ready for our trip to the Bay Area. I can't believe we leave this Friday! Yikes! It will be great to get to see everyone up there after watching Cal crush Stanfurd in the Big Game. Since Lux has gotten so big, she has outgrown her infant car seat (which is rated to 26" or 20 lbs., so she is nowhere close on the weight, but already over the height limit), and last time we traveled we found that her stroller (which is part of a "travel system" with her car seat) took up WAY too much room in the rental car. So, we decided to rent a car with a proper car seat and buy a smaller stroller. Based on some recommendations, we chose the Maclaren Volo. It is really light, small, and durable and gets rave reviews on amazon.com. It should arrive in the mail by Tuesday so we'll post our experiences after that.

The biggest problems we've had this week have been with sleeping. Lux has been waking up quite a bit recently, often demanding a feeding around 3:30 am. This hasn't been great fun, but usually she will go back to sleep with a little cuddling and a pacifier. However, last night was different. She had a really hard time getting to sleep, then woke up at 3:30 and wouldn't go back to sleep. Lots of screaming and squirming and nothing would calm her down. Finally, shortly after dawn, Paul's massage techniques seemed to have eased her pain (and gas). We know that around four months a lot of babies have problems easing out of REM sleep, which explains the problems of most of the week, but last night was something more and something we hope won't repeat itself.

Also, Lux has been showing so much interest in food (as mentioned previously) that we have given her a taste of rice cereal. She sits in her booster seat at the table with us and doesn't really swallow much but seems very excited. I can't imagine why, as the cereal looks like wallpaper paste, but Lux is also excited about putting the newspaper in her mouth, so her palate isn't exactly refined. I wish her episode last night could be blamed on rice cereal, but we hadn't given her any yesterday.

So with her talking (aahh!), standing, eating, squirming and not sleeping, our upcoming trip to San Francisco should be great fun, and the best part (other than the fact that she will get to see Cal beat Stanfurd) will be Thanksgiving, when we get to see grandparents and celebrate cousin Hera's first birthday. Lots of pictures to follow.
