Land of a Thousand Milestones
Our California trip has reached about the halfway mark and it has been amazing so far. Our flight went great, though we couldn't help but notice that it was a little easier when Lux was younger and slept more. Arriving in Oakland we picked up our rental car and Lux got her first ride in a non-infant car seat, a test run before we return home and have to buy one for our very tall daughter. She has given the seat mixed reviews, though I suspect that most of her crying has to do with the fact that the rental car doesn't have tinted windows and the sun keeps getting in her eyes. That first night we met up with friends and went to the Cal basketball season opener against Cal Poly SLO. Let's just say that Lux was lucky to sleep through that one.The next morning we were up bright and early (when aren't we these days?) to head for The Farm for Big Game. Lux looked most Go Bears in her blue and gold and the Bears were most triumphant. A good time was had by all.
Sunday was a beautiful brunch provided by the Walners, made particularly impressive by the fact that they have a two week old son named Matthew. Hard to believe Lux was once so tiny. Older sisters Julia and Kate gave us a glimpse of our future (hint - princess costumes are likely involved). Sunday evening we went out for Italian food with Ron and Aunt Danielle. Lux was pretty sleepy, but managed to wake up a bit to say hi.
On Monday night we got to see Mike, Devi and cousin Hera for the first time on this visit. The cousins last saw each other when Lux was about 6 weeks old, so we figured that this time the girls would be more evenly matched. I couldn't have been more wrong. Although Lux is definitely gaining on Hera when it comes to height, Hera is light years ahead of her. Walking, talking, eating everything from curry to granola bars, Hera is quite the little girl. When she first saw Lux she asked "What is it?" then patted her gently on the head, stole a ball from her and ran away laughing. Its hard to believe how many changes a baby undergoes before they are one.
On Tuesday we stopped by Aunt Danielle's apartment to see her Hawaii surfing photos and drop of some presents. She was kind enough to babysit Lux for an hour or so while we went out for lunch. Then it was in to Berkeley to meet up with Nana Jane and Karen who had just arrived in the Bay Area. We showed Lux the campus and some of our favorite hangouts like The Bears' Lair and Henry's.
Staying with Scott and Felicia and their daughter Sofia has been great. They have all the baby necessities in their fab Oakland apartment, and Sofia has been very generous with her toys (and her crib). In addition, Sofia has been a good influence on Lux as she is three months older (to the day), and thus much more mature. Under Sofia's tutelage Lux has made leaps and bounds, making this week one of the biggest in Lux's development.
