Not the church, not the state...
On Sunday, April 25th Lux went to her first march on Washington. Well, actually she attended the anti-war march last Winter while in utero. But this time, it was for an issue that will really affect her. She is part of the next generation of women and we feel very strongly that she should have access to contraception when she is ready, and that if she someday feels that an abortion is the only choice for her she will have safe and affordable care available on demand. The march itself was an incredibly uplifting and moving experience. There were supporters as far as the eye could see, and the march route was packed for hours. Some of the chants included: "Not the church, not the state, women will decided their fate", "Pro-life is a lie, you don't care if women die", "This is what democracy looks like", and many more. It was great to see so many families there, including many with three generations present. Lux was extremely popular and we must have had a dozen people stop to take her picture! She obliged by smiling and waving at everyone. Despite missing her afternoon nap, she was a trooper throughout the whole event.
We certainly realize that she is independent-minded enough that we can't control her political views in any way, nor would we hope to. But, we will be sure that she is exposed to many opinions and educated enough to make up her own mind. As long as she cares about something and becomes involved in the political process, we'll be happy.
On a different note, here are a few of Lux's favorite things - boxes (she has a large one she crawls into to play peekaboo or just to be alone, and many small ones which she likes to open and empty of the various contents), books (I See a Puppy, Pat the Bunny, Good Night Moon [French and English], Happy Baby Words and a set of alphabet blocks are favorites), things which are not, strictly speaking, baby toys (an Egg Man pencil sharpener, a combination lock we lost the combination to, a bag full of black eyed peas, an old keychain with a picture of mom and a monkey on it, the telephone [not the very realistic toy phone with daddy's voice on it], the tv remote [not the one without batteries],cat food, cat litter, the cat, her bedtime dolly (whose hair looks more and more like Don King's every day) and anything in any cupboard or drawer, (especially if it is dangerous). She is a good eater and there isn't much that she seems to dislike, but she loves yogurt. And she thinks peekaboo is really funny, and so is being chased around the living room.
