Going on five

Since we've been talking mainly about Lux's travels and visitors recently, I figured we should put in an entry on her developmental milestones as well. She is now 10 months 3 weeks old and weighs 20.5 lbs. She has four full teeth, two on top and two on the bottom, with number five just visible through a paper thin bit of gum on top.

Lux is highly mobile now and crawls at very high speed around the house. She negotiates stairs up and down easily now. She's been going up for a long time, but down is harder without falling. It is nice to see her come to the top of a staircase now, even if she is excited or distracted, and turn around to come down backwards. Her knees are a bit bruised and calloused from crawling on the hard floors and brick and concrete outside. She has been standing while holding onto things for a while now, and is starting to get more confident standing unsupported. Last night she stood on the patio for about 20 seconds, a new record. She is also superb at getting down from high places. She can lower herself down from the bed and the daybed in the living room despite the fact that both are about as tall as she is. She is also very comfortable roaming around the house and playing on her own (aka wreaking havok). If we are wondering how she is doing, we can call her name and she'll poke her head through the door and smile before heading back to whatever she was doing.

She has also made great progress in verbal and non-verbal communication. We had thought she was learning speech pretty slowly as a result of concentrating so much on physical skills, so we started teaching her a bit of sign language that she could use to communicate rather than just getting frustrated. She has gotten very good at a few signs including "more", "no more" and "flower". She is also starting to get a lot more vocal, babbling a lot and sometimes trying to imitate what we say. She says a lot of things like "baba" and "dada" and "yeah". Thus far it is hard to tell if there is meaning attached, but often it seems like she might be saying something intentionally.

Sippy cups are great fun as well. Lux just figured out how to use one herself and loves it. She often takes a sip of water, leans back with a big toothy grin and laughs. The rest of her eating is a bit unpredictable. She mostly loves fruit and various carbohydrates with the BIG current favorite being "Veggie Booty" from Trader Joes. In fact, she initially thought the sign for "more" just meant "more veggie booty please" and did that incessantly. She is supposed to be eating red meat and liver to get pleny of iron, but she won't have that at all. At least she loves Mom's ground chicken and spinach patties... most of the time. There is very little she can't eat now that she has some teeth and is almost one year old, so we offer her pretty much anything. She has had tiny amounts of peanut, chocolate, and egg white and thankfully hasn't shown any allergies to anything.

Overall, it is amazing how much she has grown up recently. It seems like she was a helpless baby so recently but now she seems like a little girl with a mind of her own who knows what she wants and when she wants it.
