Waiting for Brood X

The hype has been high, but so far no cicadas. We live in right in the hot zone for Brood X, a 17 year cicada and have been living in fear of waking one of these mornings to find our house covered in the ugly, red-eyed bugs. Given how often things end up in Lux's mouth we have been imagining all kinds of unpleasant situations. On the positive side, cicadas are apparently quite rich in nutrients and not altogether untasty. If they are high in iron I may just let her eat away.

Lux has been a real joy to be with and we couldn't be happier about how flexible she is. We had a wonderful time at the Gold Cup races and Lux enjoyed being passed from one person to the next. She didn't care that much about the horses, but she did enjoy herself. At one point she was laughing so hard I thought at first she was sobbing. Turns out she was watching a man tossing a football with a young boy. She really does love older kids. I just worry that she was laughing because the boy kept dropping the ball. Lux also found a new favorite toy at Gold Cup - poker chips.

The next weekend we spent working on the yard (and looking for signs of cicadas - none) and chatting with the neighbors. The house across the street has gone on the market and interest in it is high so we enjoyed watching all the cars come screeching to a halt when they saw the real estate sign. Lux has gotten over her fear of grass and has no problem crawling all over the yard, though the driveway is a little hard on her knees.

My first mother's day was great. Lux and Paul got up early and I slept in (all right, that's what happens every day) then Aunt Karen came over to wrangle the baby while made us all breakfast. Lux got to try Aunt Karen's favorite food (bacon!) and eat pancakes. Paul bought me a new lap top computer iBook G4 as a present, in an attempt to give me a fighting chance to write while keeping an eye on Lux. Then we all went to the Bowie Baysox game, where after the game Lux was the youngest child running around the bases (albeit on her father's shoulders). After the game we did some shopping, then Lux got to try, and enjoy, another new food, potstickers.

That evening we spent more time working on the back patio, which we are trying to repair so that Lux can play out there. It was probably a mistake, since while there aren't any cicadas in our yard, the mosquitos are out in full force and I am now covered in bites. We also chatted with our behind the fence neighbors, the Tardiffs, who just last week went from a carefree, no children couple to the foster parents of four boys. Now that their yard is full of fun toys the pressure is really on us to get ours up to snuff. We were hoping to have things finished by Lux's birthday, but I wonder if it is possible, because our summer is getting pretty hectic.

Currently, Paul is in California for a meeting, where he was able to catch up with Uncle Mike, Aunt Devi and cousin Hera. He says their new place is amazing and so is Hera, who is smart as a whip. Paul is her only uncle, and he was happy to report that she seemed to enjoy saying the word, and saying it alot. When Paul returns to us he'll also be greeted by his Dad and stepmom Jane who will be paying him a birthday visit. After they leave us we will host our friend Lisa who will be in town on business, then we'll be off to Cape May for a beach vacation with Scott, Felicia and their daughter Sofia. Plenty of photos to come (especially if the cicadas actually make their appearance!).
