Pain and Lobsters
Once again, we've neglected our blog posts for too long. We've been very busy and Lux has been doing really well. We are now just one week from her first birthday! Although she has been making plenty of progress physically, she still isn't quite walking on her own. She frequently stands up unassisted now, and she walks along great if she is holding our hands or pushing her little car, but she hasn't tried to take any steps all on her own yet. Nonetheless, she is still seeming a lot more grown up than she did a few weeks ago. She has learned to nod for yes, so if you ask her if she wants another cracker she will smile and nod vigorously. She also likes it when Paul and Susan kiss, and pushes our heads together to make us do it again, though she still refuses to kiss Paul herself and mostly just zrbts (blows raspberries) on both of us.One thing that has caused a bit of a difficulty over the last week is that Paul managed to injure himself which slows him down a bit. It happened on the Saturday before our first family Father's Day. We went to the California State Society summer picnic over in Potomac Park. It was a beautiful day and everything was going great. But, the grass volleyball tournament was too much for Paul to pass up, despite having not played in a couple of years. It started out fine for about five minutes, but when he went to jump for his first big kill his calf went "snap" as the muscle tore. Thankfully it wasn't a tendon tear which would have required surgery. As it is, he'll be fine, but it will take about 6 weeks to heal up during which time Lux will be faster than her hobbled daddy. Thankfully the day was not a total loss; the beer was free and good (which helped Paul's calf to feel better) and Lux won a full size Karaoke machine in the kids raffle! We ordered a few Karaoke CDs from Ebay and demonstrated that if Lux inherits her singing ability from Mom and Dad she is in BIG trouble.
Next on the agenda was yet another trip. This time we headed up to Portland, Maine for Matt and Valarie's wedding. Lux traveled well once again and this time had a lot less trouble sleeping in the hotel than she had on previous trips. We are beginning to wonder if it isn't a strange place that she dislikes as much as the pack n play, as the hotel had a proper crib. While in Maine, Paul tried to eat as much lobster as possible, including lobster eggs benedict, lobster rolls, lobster sushi, etc... The wedding was on an island and had she come along it would have been Lux's third ferry in the past few months, but we decided to go babyless. Lux shared a babysitter with 2 year old Max (a baby model!) and although she reportedly fought sleep a bit (darn pack n play) she did really well and played nicely with Max. On Sunday we headed south and stopped off at a Franco-American festival in southern Maine. It turns out that Lux may be French-Canadian. She loved the music and ate lots of poteen (cheese curds and gravy on fries - a Quebecois dish that tastes better than it sounds and looks). We visited the petting zoo, and Lux did well, though she was a bit wary of the forward goats. She has been a bit skittish around big happy dogs since getting knocked down by one at Alexandra's birthday party, and I think in her mind goats and dogs are pretty much interchangeable.
We left Maine and headed for Boston so we could help Deepto celebrate his birthday. We went out for an early dinner of Spanish tapas and while it seemed like it was going to be a great place for us all things got dicey when our nice Spanish waiter tried to make friends with Lux by giving her a glowing blue bracelet. It must have scared her, because she started to cry and every time the waiter came back she cried again. And he really was trying very hard to make friends with her, so there was a lot of crying. On the plus side, Lux decided she likes chorizo. The next day Deepto & Paul went into MIT to work while Lux and Susan explored Boston. Lux liked feeding her cheerios to the pigeons. At Deepto's place we made him a great dinner to celebrate while Lux wrought havoc and examined his extensive book collection.
Now we're back home, trying to get ready for Lux's birthday, (and Liam's - his party is this weekend). Paul is still limping around and all the blood in his leg seems to have pooled in his foot, leaving it deformed and multi-colored. Should be an interesting week.
